Building a Reading Planning and Managing System

Building a Reading Planning and Managing System

To most reading lovers, making a reading list or scheduling a reading plan might be the first step dive into reading. But plans without execution is just wasted efforts, knowing how to finish executing those reading plans in a well-ordered manner is the key problem.

Like doing most other things, making a plan is quite easy, but the let plans continually being carried out might be a tough thing, because it requires us master with a strong will.

In the software field, to make sure a requirement will be achieved in time, we may adopt some tools and methods, those tools and methods will divide a whole task into various phases and make each phase manageable and trackable. After we finish every single phase the whole task will also be accomplished.

Having applied those tools and methods into my own projects and reading tasks, I draw the conclusion that those tools and methods can be well-functioning on reading plans as well.

Tools available for project management are todo-list, milestone management tools, and blackboard like apps, but the most suitable for reading management are blackboard like apps.

To begin with, firstly we divide our reading process into a few sub-processes, for my interest, I divided my reading process into three parts: “Open”, “In Progress” and “Done”. In the “Open” phase, I listed books I wanna read and sort them by priorities.

Task List

picture above, I converted my book list to a todo list, from the top of the list is the book I want to read most. Once I start to read a book, I transfer the book to the “In Progress” phase.

In the “In Progress” phase, I can track how much time I’ve spent on that book, I can also leave notes, questions, and comments.

Task Detail

Once I’ve finished reading a book, I will transfer it to the “Done” phase.

However, based on your own scenarios, you can split your reading progress into more detailed phases or totally different phases, it all depends on your choices.
